Artist's Description

Growing up, I loved my dolls passionately and took them everywhere I went. They were my companions, my playmates. I used to spend hours "feeding" bathing and dressing them. This is the fourth in my doll series. As an adult there are things I cherish as well and I will represent them in my doll series. Here is my pretty Frida Kahlo doll.

A big influence in my art has been the memories and experiences I have had being part of a huge, beautiful, extended family. San Pascual is one of my favorite saints to paint because of my love and memories of my grandma Reynalda Almeida. My greatest fortune in life has been being one of her 22 grandchildren. She lived in a little adobe casita near Canyon Road in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The heart of my Grandma's home beat in the kitchen. As we drove to her home down the little hill street of Camino Sin Nombre, my heart fluttered with anticipation. She always had a pot simmering on the stove and open arms ready for her family. Victoria De Almeida

Through my work I always hope to tell a story about my personal experiences as a Hispanic woman. I was born and raised in the beautiful state of New Mexico and my family has been in northern New Mexico for over 10 generations. My work comes from my memories of growing up in a large extended family and my favorite subjects to paint are the people and traditions of northern New Mexico. I have always loved art and have wanted to become an artist for as long as I can remember. My primary medium is acrylic on canvas. I have also enjoyed using acrylic on wood as well. As a self-taught artist, I really fight looking at something when I'm painting or sketching. I love just allowing my work to evolve organically. My preliminary sketches are...
