Artist's Description
This is a painting of my great grandmother Carmelita Chavez Anaya (1884-1981). She lived in a little village Southeast of Santa Fe called Galisteo, New Mexico. She is descended from the original settlers of New Mexico. She was the curandera (medicine woman) and partera (midwife) in her little village. She mended many bones, brought down many fevers and delivered most the children in the village. I am very proud to be a 10th generation New Mexican and to be descended from this amazing little lady. I paint to honor my Hispanic culture and to honor all those amazing strong people that came before me.

About Victoria De Almeida

I have always loved art and have wanted to become an artist for as long as I can remember. My primary medium is acrylic on canvas. I have also enjoyed using acrylic on wood as well. As a self-taught artist, I really fight looking at something when I'm painting or sketching. I love just allowing my work to evolve organically. My preliminary sketches are...
